New Release – Turning Darkness into Light by Filip Dahl
Filip Dahl (Norway) started his music career as lead guitarist in various Norwegian rock bands back in the 70s, before moving on to become a recognized engineer and record producer. He was one of the main founders and owners of the highly acclaimed and successful Trondheim based Brygga Studio during the 80s and 90s.
He took a self-imposed break from the music scene during the beginning of the new century, but has returned as a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. This has so far resulted in four solo albums ‘Dark Angels and White Demons’ (2016), ‘A Fire Through the Night’ (2018) and ‘Translucent Dreams of an Opaque Mind’ (2020) while the latest album ‘Storyteller’ was released in 2022.
Filip Dahl’s music spans from melodic prog rock via blues rock to harmonic and symphonic rock, clearly revealing his roots and influences by bands like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Kansas, Marillion and Dream Theater. Critics have especially highlighted and acclaimed Filip Dahl’s lead guitar work, as it is characterised by a distinct style and tone which is contributing to a very clear and easily recognisable signature.
His new release ‘Turning Darkness into Light’ is out 3rd November on all major platforms.
“I am sure that all of us are experiencing some dark moments in our lives time, when nothing seems to be going in the right direction. These moments can indeed fill us up with great despair and hopelessness. However, we should never surrender completely to these feelings without fighting hard to try to defeat them, as the accomplishment enables us to approach the brighter sides of life again. This was also what initially inspired me to write ‘Turning Darkness into Light’.”
“I guess that my influences could be regarded as relatively wide when it comes to music, as it spans from melodic prog rock via blues rock to harmonic and symphonic hard rock. I did however feel that I was going back to my metal and hard rock roots with this release, as ‘Turning Darkness into Light’ in many ways can be regarded as a straight forward, guitar-based tune with lots of energy and positive feelings.”
“The song will be accompanied with a music video which will be available on the release day on my YouTube channel Filip Dahl – YouTube. I wanted to make a video this time which would invite the viewer to take part in some of the feelings and thoughts that inspired me to write and record this song. It is so much discussion regarding the pros and cons of using AI these days, and it can clearly be both a fantastic tool and quite provocative and frightening when it comes to what it can lead to in the future if it is misused. I did anyway end up with using AI generated illustrations this time as I felt it would enhance and lift the music to an even higher level by combining it with the visual impressions.”
