New Release – Silhouette by Foot Squeaker
Battling to revive a dormant music scene in their hometown of Gorey (Ireland), alt-rock masons Foot Squeaker have laid the first cornerstones of the new guitar band stronghold. Building things from the ground up with a DIY mindset showing that you don’t have to be from the capital city to turn heads in the Irish Music Scene. The band released three singles ‘No Connection’, ‘Wayside’ and ‘Specimen’ over 2020, garnering radio play across Ireland and countries across the world including the UK, Canada and New Zealand. 2023 sees the band back to full focus with their new single ’Silhouette’, mixed by Daniel Fox (Gilla Band) and mastered by Darragh Nolan aka Astakalapa set for release September 1. A pre-save is available here.
What’s the song about?
“‘Silhouette’ is a song about disappearing into yourself after a traumatic event, spinning in a personality vacuum with the only way out being the love and support of your special someone. Don’t become a silhouette of yourself, find out who you really are and try to overcome.”
Where was it recorded and mixed?
“The song was recorded here in my own studio, Creagh Studios in Gorey, Co. Wexford. We said we’d track it ourselves this time which of course meant we had no time constraints in terms of how long we spent on getting the sounds and parts we wanted down. We then sent it on to engineer Daniel Fox (Gilla Band) to mix it. I’ve been a huge fan of the music he has been producing over the last few years. I particularly love his work the Silverbacks albums.”
When releasing a new single is there a sense of excitement or panic?
“There is certainly a sense of excitement. You’ve worked so hard on the writing, arrangement and recording of a song and then you get it out to the world to hear. That one click of a mouse actually gets it worldwide via streaming which still is an amazing thing. We generally do the PR ourselves and spend many, many hours on emails and research. There is great satisfaction when you get a positive response and we genuinely appreciate all the radio stations and websites who support us, big or small.”
Is there a story behind the cover artwork? Did you make it yourself?
“I have a graphic design background, Richard works in film and Michael studied photography so between us we had the winning formula for this cover. We knew we wanted something woozy and unclear like the feeling in the songs lyrics. One lovely Summers evening we set up at the side of my house and Richard lit it from the bank above, along with a projector spraying the Foot Squeaker logo over our white t-shirts. Once we had the general composition Michael’s girlfriend, Sam, started snapping on a slow shutter speed while we changed position in slow motion into various ridiculous poses. The final chosen shot for the cover is exactly what we were going for and does remind me a bit of the Soundgarden Superunkown cover.”
