New Release – Museum of Brotherly Love by Pete Galub and Matt Kanelos
Pete Galub is a songwriter and guitarist from New York City. He has released two solo albums, and currently sings and plays guitar in the band Tape Hiss, which includes members of Sonic Youth, The Modern Lovers, and Arthur Russell’s band.
On April 1st Pete will release ‘Museum of Brotherly Love’ which is a collaboration with Matt Kanelos. The song can be streamed and bought here.
Matt Kanelos is a pianist, composer and sought-after collaborator in the New York City. He draws equally from both his music conservatory background and his 20 years of experience in the folk and experimental music scenes of New York and Chicago. In recent years, Matt has performed and recorded with Carol Lipnik, Ed Pastorini, Aldo Perez, Kyle Sanna, Dana Lyn, Oren Bloedow, Jenifer Jackson, Jon Lundbom, Lorraine Leckie, Richard McGraw, Chris Moore and Joe Adamik.

How and when did you meet?
“We met in 2005 or so. Matt was in the audience at a show I played at a long-defunct club called the Living Room in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. I remember hearing about Matt and his talent through mutual friend and songwriter, Noam Weinstein.”
How did the collaboration come about?
“Shortly after the start of the pandemic, we fell into a pattern of checking in on Skype once a week. At some point we just decided to try writing a song together remotely, and that’s how it started.”
“The song was written slowly over the course of 2020 and 2021, a remote collaboration during the height of the Covid pandemic. We wrote most of it on Skype, and when restrictions started to lift, were able to meet in person to record/arrange it.”
“We wrote pretty much everything together: lyrics, melody, chords. We recorded everything between the two of us. Me on vocals, guitar and bass and Matt on vocals, piano, and drums. All tracking happened at Matt’s apartment in Brooklyn.”
How would you describe it?
“Musically, it’s an adventurous indie pop/folk tune. The melody and harmony don’t always stick to conventional form, and that hopefully grabs the listener’s ear. Lyrically, it’s got a lot of heart and is trying to get at what was and in many ways still is going on as a result of the Covid pandemic. That said, we don’t believe the answers to be cut and dry, and a lot of the lyrics seem to come from our unconscious- individual and collective.”
Is there a story behind the cover artwork?
“We spent a lot of time looking for stock images that might go with the sentiment of the song. Finally, Pete, while on the way to meet a friend in the city, randomly snapped what became the cover photo. When the photo was taken, there was no intention behind it having anything to do with the artwork. But, on reflection, it seemed to convey what we were going for. Funny, how that happens sometimes.”
