New Release – Based On A True Story (album) by Maisy Grace
At just eighteen years old, Cornwall (UK) singer-songwriter Maisy Grace, releases her debut album ‘Based On A True Story’, following the success of her two 2023 singles; ‘I Never Needed Anyone’ and ‘Break It Down’. The 11-track album delivers all those feelings of summer, with tracks like ‘Something Different’ inspired by Maisy’s long love of surfing and the power of the Atlantic Ocean. ‘Feel Brand New’ provides a bold new vibe which embodies that ultimate summer anthem.
Growing up in Cornwall, Maisy has related much of her music to the place she loves the most. With her dulcet tones intertwining effortlessly with soft house beats; undoubtedly offering that sunset summer feeling, the album harmonises beautifully with Maisy’s home county. Maisy’s debut album features brand-new tracks, telling the story of making your way through life, with Maisy pouring her personal experiences and emotions into her lyrics, taking fans on a journey and giving an intimate glimpse into her life and thoughts.
Did you have to overcome any difficulties with the writing or recording?
“I did have some difficulties as there were so many songs that I wanted to write. I get writers block sometimes, often lasting a few weeks but this was probably the first time that I have managed to power through it! I was going away for six weeks at the start of November so I knew I had to get songs written and done before I left and I was really surprised that I managed it.”
What movie should feature your music and why?
“There is one song on the album which I think would be awesome in a surf movie. It’s called ‘Something Different’ and I wrote it about surfing and the mindset you have to be in when the conditions are tricky. The other songs are all different and have such different feels to them, so I can imagine them in any sort of movie.”
What are you hoping to achieve with this release?
“I think the album itself is a huge achievement for me. Not a lot of 18 year olds have the chance to do this so early on in their music careers, and I am incredibly thankful to Kouncilhouse for the opportunity. Of course, I do have the dream that the album blows up and gives me the chance to play loads of gigs all over the world, but I am going university in September so it might have to wait for a little while.”
What are your favourite memories of writing and/or recording the album?
“Due to me fitting the writing of the album around travelling and working, I had to fit it in anywhere I could. I seem to remember having a tune in my headphones whilst laying on a beach in Thailand with my notes app on my phone. I think that’s a pretty cool memory of writing.”
How long did it take you to write and the record the album?
“It’s hard to pinpoint an exact time, but I think it’s been about a year in the making. I was finishing college and exams and had quite a lot on so Kouncilhouse sent me a track to work on whenever I had time. It took me quite a long time because I had never done that sort of thing before, writing over someone else’s music but it turned into ‘Circles’ which was released last year. We loved it so much that we figured why stop?”
